There’s a quick race mode for those who simply want to jump into a car and test their mettle against other opponents for a few laps. The changes to the game are marginal at best, and F1 carries a full price tag.
However, die-hard Formula One fans need look no further than F1 for the most up-to-date–visually or otherwise– F1 racing game on the market.

Newcomers will find a set of superb tutorials that guide you through each track, demonstrating how to tackle every corner as you spectate from the back of a two-seater F1 car, before you have a go yourself. However, FV s strongest feature is versatility. Unlike GPGwith its vat-like quota of complexity and mind-blowing realism, F comes with a set of options that allow you to configure the game exactly to your liking.
So if you want, you can spend countless hours poring over your car set-up, shifting your gear ratios, damping, springs, ride height, fuel load and downforce. However, if you’re more into the arcade style of racing, simply customise your car on the Basic Set-Up screen, turn on a couple of driving aids, select the behind car viewpoint and get driving. What’s more, you can play just as easily from a behind-car viewpoint as you can from the cockpit view, again catering for simulation and arcade fans alike.
We have a very mixed audience, obviously, because on one hand we have the guys who play these games because they’re the closest they can get to driving these cars. They want simulation racing, for want of better words. And at the high end, with all of the difficulty assists turned off then we pretty much get that. As for periphery, all the data from this season is being included, along with, perversely, the actual weather conditions of individual races.
For instance, it will start raining on the exact same lap it did in the actual race. However, development is due to finish before the season ends, but online updates are promised for those who want to replicate the proceedings exactly. It’s this extreme attention to detail that will appeal to the hardcore Formula One fans. And if the new physics engine can cope with 22 cars on the track at once unlike the 99 version , then FI I could well be a strong contender for pole position in the genre.
Gamers not impressed with the previous release, though, won’t find enough here to change their minds. Comparisons to other titles aside, the racing in F1 is superb. Although the technical side of the game can be an issue, the racing simulation is raw and gritty once you’re on the track.
Cars handle extremely realistically, perhaps even more so than F1 , and the constant battle is between not only you and other drivers, but you and your machine as well. You have to find your line, weave through traffic, know when to slow down, and when to go full throttle. Tune-up options give you the chance to control nearly every aspect of your racer: tire compounds, rebound, ride height, spring rate, camber, gearing, and more.
For the hands-on simulation lover, it doesn’t get much better. For gamers not interested in the minute details, it is possible to do well without hitting the garage every couple of miles, but tinkering is half the fun. The weather effects are vastly improved in this iteration, with dynamic changes sprinkled liberally on many of the tracks.
