I used to be able to enter an email recipient in the ‘To’ box on a new email by clicking on the ‘To’ button and using the ‘Contacts’ dialog box that opened, to search and select the recipient from the ‘Contacts’ list. This no longer works and the following error message appears. If the problem persists, restart Outlook. Also the ability to right click on the contact in the ‘Contacts’ folder in Outlook and select ‘New message to contact’ no longer opens the drop-down list box that provides that link.

Also I get ‘Operation Failed’ if I have Outlook open and click on a web mailto: link, yet if Outlook is closed and I click on the link, Outlook will open with the blank message and To field set correctly. Ran ScanPst repair tool. Probably same as above, but I am struggling here Renamed the outlook. Disabled all Addins, COM and otherwise. Ran Repair Option from from re-installing. I have a lot of rules. Was this reply helpful?

Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help. Thanks for your feedback. I considered system restore, but only had one restore point for some reason. I too am using Avast.

I have only recently switched from AVG as i found that was interfering with Chrome. It would be interesting to see if bonehead is also using Avast. I might even remove it as a test. I uninstalled Avast and lo and behold, right click works, I can drag emails to journal entries. I can right click on journal entries. Mailto: link on a web page works again if Outlook is open and the recipient buttons all work again. So my advice is ditch Avast for now. I am going to try and inform them.

Whether they do anything about remains to be seen. In the ‘File name:’ drop down box type: RegistryBackup, choose a folder to save to, I always use Desktop easier to find that way and click ‘Save’. Click on each of the sub-folders including the Outlook folder itself and examine the entries in each.

However Avast have replied to my bug report and asked me to reinstall Avast and recreate the error. Ghost pst files being one of them. Just been into the registry at your locations, I have no entries that have Avast in them, yet have the problems back after installing again. So I have created screen dumps, ran the Avast generate tool and uploaded to the Avast ticket.

Strangely this has just happened to me as well, despite using for years now. I have tried from searching the net.

How satisfied are you with this reply? Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site. Paul NG. I have had the same problem with contacts not able to be accessed and the same error message. I used the ‘System restore’ function in administrator user which reset the system to an earlier date you can select. If the problem occurred recently, this should not be a problem but the longer it is left, then the ‘system restore’ will not be able to go that far back. This has repaired the problem so far.

I have been using Outlook for many years and this has only just occurred. Just wondered if any updates to antivirus program triggered this off. I use Avast. In reply to Paul NG. Thanks for the post. Edit: Disabling Avast makes no difference, so will try an uninstall. Thanks for the tip that appears to have solved this. Update: Reported to Avast both by phone and web page.

In reply to Welshgasman08’s post on August 14, Yes, Avast seems to be the problem! A recent programme upgrade has added additional registry entries that seem to interfere with MS Outlook and stop it using its links to the intended list boxes within its own programme. My solution has been to delete the Avast registry entries that refer to Outlook in the registry, and Outlook now performs as expected. I haven’t uninstalled Avast and so far haven’t had any untoward or unexpected programme errors with Avast.

BTW – doing a System Restore my 1st option didn’t clear the malfunctions as this doesn’t remove registry entries that were written to the registry by the upgrade Avast performed. Hope this helps those who are still baffled! In reply to boneheadworkie’s post on August 17, That is good work.

I just swapped to Total Security, for the time being at least. In reply to Welshgasman08’s post on August 17, Close Outlook. I will not take any responsibility for you removing the wrong entries in your registry! On the ‘File’ menu go to ‘Export’. The ‘Export Registry File’ window will open. This will take a while as it’s a very large file! If you find entries with ‘Avast’ in them highlight that entry and press delete on your keyboard. On the Registry Editor ‘File’ menu click ‘Exit’.

The system saves the altered file before closing the window. Restart Outlook and you should find that it works as expected. In reply to boneheadworkie’s post on August 19, So your post will prove invaluable for me to check those entries. Edit: Just been into the registry at your locations, I have no entries that have Avast in them, yet have the problems back after installing again. Now in the process of uninstalling it again. This just gets stranger and stranger. In reply to Welshgasman08’s post on August 19, Just another ‘me too’.

I noticed the problem a day after installing the latest Avast! This site in other languages x.
