I begin by trying to find a basic drum loop that doesn’t sound like a bad German techno act that you’d find in a club on Spring Break. After much hunting I settle for a hardcore ish ‘bum-chika-bum-chika’ loop and then add a faster bass drum and hi-hat loop to keep things driving along. Pasting this into the grid is easy and is only hindered by the slow access speed of the PS CD drive.
Once this is stripped in I go in search of a bass and melody structure that I can introduce. Bass lines are easy I want to create something with an industrial edge, but on first hunting most of the melodies sound a bit poncey.
I eventually settle for a moody piano line and strip this in. Now I want to build the track toward a Trent Reznor-like crescendo before stripping the drums out and letting things settle into something quiet and moody. Can I find some nasty guitars though? I settle for some noisy synth sounds and some more rhythmic bangs and crashes before cutting everything off and finishing with just that moody piano line and a hi-hat.
It’s only a couple of minutes long, but it already sounds reasonably professional. Add a touch of reverb and this baby’s ready to be recorded for posterity. Now all I need is a recording contract and someone to appreciate the psychedelic video I created to go along with it. As I said in my preview last month, this is probably the coolest thing that will ever be released on the PlayStation, and it’s a very different kind of product that deserves to sell very well.
Upon first tinkering this comes across as a very basic sample sequencing program. Some of you may have tried the Acid products on the PC from Sonic Foundry and this is fundamentally the same thing. You pull loops and samples off the CD, load them into memory and piece together a song by ‘painting’ these loops into a grid. Although a bit fiddly, and limited by the PlayStation’s meager memory capacity, it is actually possible to produce some very decent results.
I pieced together a fairly respectable ’70s cop show-style theme complete with ‘wacka’ guitars and funky bass lines in about an hour. Shoe was humming it after I played it to him, so it must have been OK.
I’ve not even touched on the ‘Jam’ game and video editor here The real fun is making music. With patience, it’s very enjoyable.
Being a fan of the original Music released in Europe only. I’m tickled pink to see its sequel make it over to these shores. This game jams. You can create many a groovy beat on this disc, even if your musical training doesn’t go beyond puffing on a recorder. So I’m hoping my W10 64 bit single core processor machine will work well with this.

Having the same problem someone else mentioned regarding loading songs. I am on windows I am able to run the program fine and using pretty much all of the features.
However, when I attempt to load a song I saved, it crashes. I tried loading a demo song and got the same result. Anyone have any suggestions? Tom 1 point. Tom -1 point. The problem is, it randomly crashes. The reason for that is because the game was made for a single core machine, not multiple cores, so PC’s with more than one core mess with the programming causing it to crash. Before running mtv music generator open Task Manager and minimize it. You should see multiple check boxes and they are all checked.
Uncheck all the boxes, but leave CPU 0 checked. Now you’re telling mtv music generator only to run using one core, and it will be more stable, and it won’t crash as quickly or as often. This may or may not entirely fix mtv music generator from crashing. There is a known crashing problem with SimCity 4 Deluxe on multiple core systems.
So, I try it with older Windows games that seem to randomly crash. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. When you restart your computer however, and you want to run the program, you’ll have to do that whole Set Affinity thing again, but I remember reading a long long time ago that you can set it up so that it sets the affinity for you, but I never did it. Able to click the setup. Same reaction when mounted or just unzipped. Does this need to be from a cd?
J76 0 point. This works on windows Mount iso with daemon tools, run the setup from the mounted iso, leave iso mounted after install, go to codemasters folder on c drive or wherever you installed it double click mtvmusic and it works.
Letztergeist 0 point. Install worked fine. Didn’t have to mount the iso even. Maybe it did it by itself because the disk was showing as drive G: but I didn’t have to mount it myself. This program was hella fun back in the day. I downloaded mainly to rip some drum samples, but some of the bass sounds and pads weren’t too bad for that intentional lofi kinda vibe.

How do i save a song and then reload it? Everytime i try loading a track, the whole software just shuts down. Same for the video making section. Someone please help.
