DrawPlus is such a great program, but there are some areas that are lacking compared to Adobe Illustrator or CorelDraw, but for the price difference, hands down Serif always wins! I have been reluctant to purchase Affinity, since DrawPlus X8 is so great. Today after downloading the Affinity trial and one of the first things that I noticed is that there is no AutoTrace function!

I thought maybe I was just not finding it, so I did an an online search and found your blog post. I will say that I am shocked that there is no AutoTrace function in Affinity. Autotracing is the process of converting a bitmap into a vector graphic. In DrawPlus, autotracing can be performed in the AutoTrace studio, a dedicated studio environment which uses a variety of profiles.

Kinda makes me wish that I could have been a fly on the wall during the Serif corporate staff meetings when they decided to Trash the AutoTrace function when they redesigned DrawPlus and named it Affinity. Also how they trashed all the other Serif Products like WebPlus etc.

This definitely a deal breaker for me. Thanks for the time you put into gathering this information. For me this is the one feature that has kept me from jumping on board the entire Affinity trio, which, in my case would be Photo, Designer, and Publisher. Every other thing I need to do these three software packages can handle with ease.

But as someone who creates vinyl graphics, vector tracing ability is an absolute must. There is absolutely no way I could afford to spend the time you did in your workaround hand coloring or hand tracing an image in order to then use a third party tool to then accomplish this simple task. However, despite the fact that they both work in essentially similar ways, they also have significant variances, including the tools they use. Unfortunately, Affinity Designer does not offer a tool for easy vector outlining.

Instead, raster images must be traced by hand or other software needs to be used to get the job done. This can be a deal breaker for many designers since live tracing helps to speed up workflow and improve accuracy of tracing results. This is also known as the Image Trace tool later versions of the application. Essentially, Live Trace allows designers to create a new vector drawing from an existing artwork by tracing the outline of the image.

I don’t know of any other way to upscale a raster image that small other then converting it to vector. If I could get the raster image to have enough detail at a larger size I think the vector tracing could work, but that’s where I’m at a loss as to how.

The problem is all the vectorizing software will smooth out the pixels which defeats the look of the blocky nature of the skin. I have actually completed the vectorization of the skin manually.

I have ten kids, and if I have to do this to every single one it will take me until before I’m finished LOL. If you stretch it to x you are introducing distortion since the ratios are different. Not sure this is intended.

It is best to work on one image at a time. Move the image you will be focusing on to the art-board. This is where the magic happens. Since we are dealing with watercolor images, I am going to assume there is more than one shade of color in your image.

You can play around with the Trace Bitmap settings, but to pull all the contrast out of your element you are going to need to select the following settings:. Under Multiple scans, select Colors. Check Smooth, Stack scans, and Remove Background. I like to keep the number of scans at For simple images, I never end up with this many layers.

But even for more complex works, it keeps the contrast relatively accurate. Select OK. Open Affinity Designer, create a new document, and drag your InkScape file on to the design board. Once your image is on your board, select Edit Document. To remove the background of the image, I found it easiest to use the Layers window.

I just unselect all items with the background color. Now you can really play around with your image.
