Act, and the feelings will follow the behavior. This book was recommended to me as a easy and concise read describing servant leadership. Because it was recommended by someone I trusted I did not review it before providing it to my staff.

I had several staff offended by the emphasis on Christianity and Jesus. I will say that it brought an extra dimension into the conversation as we discussed the messenger and why that was offensive and I appreciated being able to have that conversation. However, I would not recommend it for a staff read. I really loved this book. I’ve decided to stop rating non-fiction for now.

The stories in the book are very engaging and I would say there are a lots to learn from it. But all my reading, which one I very much appreciated, the teaching that touched me most were the attitudes of love for his daily routine to become a better professional and human being. However, the book is absolutely a product of its time making casual statements about, gender role rigidity, the undesirable call to unionize, and how “people just need to choose to do better and pull themselves up regardless of situation.

The book is told in narrative form with characters that are flat, static, and stereotyped. It is primarily dialogue, most of which serves to deliver o random quotes by other thinkers.

A startling number of quotes are unattributed and presented as folk wisdom. Though it may have been a unique voice when first published, the book fails to present an engaging narrative and its guidance is essentially Hunter throwing every cliche at the reader in hopes they catch something. Ultimately, it is neither informative nor inspirational. I really struggled with the way it was written – it seemed to me that Jim outlined what he wanted to say about leadership and, let’s be honest, the religious correlation with that , then came up with a story where he could preach out of 6 different mouths.

The dialogue was silly and unrealistic, and I found myself skimming to find what he actually wanted me to understand about being a leader. Nothing in this was particularly new to me, and it seemed to come from a very specific white, male, privileged perspective.

I imagine if someone like Jim were to read it, they would find it profound. I, however, did not. I also made the note “barf, barf, barf, barf, barf” for the first time in my Kindle reading history, so that was fun. If your curious, it was when “Kim” said something about the lack of commitment in modern society, and lead with abortion being the result.

I’d love to really dig into why that is bullshit, but here is really not the place for it. The only thing I liked about this was that it was short. I enjoyed reading this book. The author weaves the tail of an executive who, while visiting a monastery attains lessons on authority and leadership.

The author explains that trust is essentially built by pushing others to gently achieve their NEEDS not wants which in return builds an eagerness in others to follow you. And that rather then having power over others it is wiser to build AUTHORITY – which requires patience, kindness, humbleness, respectfulness, forgiveness, honesty and commitment – along with the discipline to serve and sacrifice for others.

I was assigned this book because my job was bringing in the author to speak. I enjoyed the book but I must say by the end I felt like it was simply a regurgitation of all those leadership phrases bundled in one book, with the exception that Hunter pairs each revelation with a character. Author created an engaging setting with some comic relief The Sargent that keeps the reader engaged. In the end, basic principles of be kind, and kinder still. Still a 3 star rating. And Sargent is still the winner. A very powerful insights and thoughts have been added to the book by Mr. James C. He actually did a really good job. The way he turned the lessons into story is just awesome. I really liked the book and recommend for anyone who want to get and feel the real joy in life through serving and living for others by being an authority-based leader Servant Leader.

Our thoughts and feelings drive our behavior. What we pay attention to, spend time with, or serve, we became attached to. Thank you Mr Hunter and Simeon. The book and messages within will make most leaders a bit uneasy at times. However, this book does a great job of easing those anxieties, while explaining real world application of the principles to all aspects of a leader’s life.

There are times where the story line gets a bit hoakie, which is my only real criticism. There’s no way those 5 or 6 people asked all those questions and knew all those quotes. My temporary suspension of disbelief only goes so far. Nonetheless, the important messages are clearly delivered and reinforced. I enjoyed the way the narrator slightly altered voice and accents to consistently portray the main characters throughout.

Well-delivered, Sir. This is a great starting point for servant leadership as it continues to grow in the business world. A must read for anyone striving to be a leader!!! It’s a business fable about a man at a small leadership class at a monastery. Cliches and well-worn quotes and stories are jammed into the dialogue of the characters, even when they seem unnatural. Ironically, near the beginning – after the author talks about how popular this book is – the characters discuss how reading books and going to seminars rarely changes behavior. Everyone agrees in theory that you get better results if you treat your people with respect, but nobody puts it into practice.

Going through the rest of this book is unlikely to dramatically change anyone’s philosophy or behavior. This book may have been innovative decades ago, but sounds like the same old thing now. Everyone is familiar with the concept of “servant leadership” now, but leaders still repeatedly give in to every failing listed and more.
